The Douro valley

The Douro valley is ones of the most beautiful in the world. The small town Pinhão is the heart of the port district. There are 2000people living in Pinhão, most of them are involved in the port industry. The Douro valley is about 120km long and 40wide with Pinhão as the heart. Not a large area, but what great ports are being made in this valley. The relations here are perfect for growing grapes.
Article imageDominic M. Symington is the fourth generation father and son in the port production company Symington. Dominic is the proud owner and manager of a port house that has three of the best and most famous ports in the world in his production. They can trace their port production and family interests 350years and 13generations- back to the 1600s. They really have long and proud traditions in this business.

In the 70’s the family bought graham’s that was up for sale. This may be the world’s most known port company in the world. After the buying of Graham’s they have produced the well known port brands Graham’s, Dow’s and Warre’s along with some wine brands.
Article imageThere is a total of 30 000 wine farmers in the Douro valley and every farmer have approximately 50m2. In addition to their own 19 win yards the Symington family is dependent on these small producers to cover the demand.
Article imageIt is produced about ten million cases or 90 million litres of port every year in the whole world. The Symington family is the market leader with 27% of the production. They deliver to the whole world, and in 2005 there was sold 30 000 bottles in Norway, primarily Graham’s Vintage 2003.
