Wines from Dao Sul – Good grapes and passion

A couple of hours drive south of Porto in Portugal is Dao Sul, one of Portugal’s wine areas. And in the pine forest just outside the little village Carregal do Sal lies the wine yard Quinta de Cabriz, owned by Carlos Lucas, built over the last 15 years and very impressing after such short time.
Article imageQuinta de Cabriz is a great modern wine house with elegant meeting rooms, wine cellars and a very good restaurant. Carlos produces about 40 brands of wine from his six wine yards. Portuguese and gradually many international markets are familiar with wines like; Quinta de Cabriz, Paco de Santar, Quinta dos Grilos, Quinta das Tecedeiras and Monte da Cal, to name a few. The wine yards are located in Portugal’s finest wine districts, Douro in the north, Dao Sul and Bairrada south of Porto, Estremadura north of Lisbon and Alentejo south east of Lisbon.

Stunning property

The little village Santar is an idyllic and colourful middle-age village with narrow paving stone streets and alleys, low buildings with stone stairs and well kept small gardens. In the main street is an old house that now partially is made in to a museum – and that now is owned by Carlos and his wine company. Inside the gates is a stunning garden that kind of reminds you of a mini version of Versailles. Here is the production of one of his wine yards located. Across from the production building is a where the wine is bottled and the storage room with barrels lined up.

No secrets

Carlos has no secrets he would like to disclose when it comes to wine production, other that passion for the profession. There is no answer or short cuts to a good wine. Wine is wine, but it should be produced for the sake of the wine it self and not to remind of another wine. It is all about the relationship between people and nature, good grapes, love and passion. Put your sole in to it. If you have good grapes, you will get a good wine that probably will be different from other wines, is Carlos’ advice. He puts his sole and more in to his wine production.
